Competition Heightened as Play Heads Indoors
Al Allaf, Brown, & Glasspool Light Up the Second Round
After hard rains forced competition play inside, the second round of the singles main draw kicked off with victories from No. 1 seed Karlovskiy, Glasspool, and Al Allaf. The doubles main draw will feature semi-finals tomorrow at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
Hawkeye Kareem Al Allaf won the first match of the day 6-3, 6-4 against former Northwestern Wildcat Strong Kirchheimer. Al Allaf has advanced to the quarterfinals to face Collin Altamirano, the No. 3 seed in the tournament. If he wins the quarterfinal match, he will face either Evgeny Karlovskiy or Sebastien Boltz.
Lloyd Glasspool of England narrowly escapes Danny Thomas to advance to the quarterfinals with a 7-6, 7-6 victory. He will face Nick Chappell. Chappell defeated 2017 NCAA Champion Petros Chrysochos 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Waukee native Alex Brown advanced to the quarterfinals this morning with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Alfredo Perez. The Fighting Illini has been on a hot streak here in Iowa City and will look to continue it tomorrow. If Brown wins tomorrow, he will face the winner of Chappell/Glasspool.
The doubles main draw final is set between the teams of Corwin and Spec against Adamson and Chappell. After both teams’ victories today, they are set to face each other for the doubles title.
