The Old Capitol Tennis Championships will award current Iowa Hawkeyes Men Tennis players Kareem Allaf and Oliver Okonkwo with wild card entries into the main draw singles tournament of the USTA Pro Circuit event. While both players entered the tournament, the wild cards awarded by tournament director, Alex Voss, will allow them to compete in the main draw which begins Tuesday, July 16, 2019.
Kareem Allaf, who hails from Dubai, UAE, will be a redshirt senior for the Hawkeyes during the 2019-2020 season. This summer, Kareem has played in Davis Cup, an international tournament among countries, and a pair of USTA Pro Circuit tournaments in Champaign, Illinois and Wichita, Kansas. From the experiences he’s feeling confident and hopes to earn more wins to improve his world ranking.
Coming off his experience last year Kareem says, “It is great to have pro tennis back in Iowa City. I always wanted to have a tournament such as this at home. Making the quarterfinals last year meant a lot for me and told me I can compete at the pro level. I’m excited to compete here again and have a home crowd rooting for our team to do well. The tournament had a great atmosphere last year and I’m looking forward to an even better one this year.”
Oliver Okonkwo, from Berkshire, England, will be the second wild card selected by Alex Voss. While Oliver is entering his second season as a member of the Hawkeye Men’s Tennis team, it will be his first appearance at the Old Capitol Tennis Championships. It is also his first appearance in an ITF World Tennis Tour 25K tournament.
