Qualifying No. 1 seed and Iowa native Alexander Brown (pictured right) won his match against Ian Chadwell today to advance to the singles main draw. Brown took the first set 6-4 before surrendering the second set 6-3. After falling behind 9-6 in the match tiebreak, Brown battled back to score a 13-11 victory. Brown will face fellow qualifier, Gianni Ross, in the opening round of the main draw tomorrow. Ross scored a straight set victory over Aron Hiltzik.
Competing as a wildcard in the singles main draw, Iowa Hawkeye Sophomore Oliver Okonkwo (pictured below) dropped his first round match 7-6, 6-4 against the No. 5 seed Tunisian Aziz Dougaz. Okonkwo will be back in action tomorrow as he competes in the doubles main draw alongside fellow Hawkeye Will Davies.
Six other players qualified for the singles main draw including Americans Gui Gomez, Preston Touliatos, Alfredo Perez, and Alexander Lebedev. Canadian Joshua Peck outlasted qualifying No. 9 seed Vuk Budic 10-6 in the match tiebreak to advance. Ukrainian Volodymyr Uzhylovskyi won straight sets against Sean Sculley to punch his ticket to the main draw as well.
Two of the seeded players from the singles main draw advanced to the second round today, as No. 3 seed Alex Rybakov defeated Jacob Dunbar and No. 6 seed Axel Geller downed Juan Carlos Manuel Aguilar. Additionally, Nathan Ponwith won his match against wildcard Tristan Boyer to move on to the second round. He will face the winner of No. 8 seed Evan Zhu and Ezekiel Clark, who play Wednesday.
In the doubles main draw, the top four seeded pairs were in action. The No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 seeds all earned first round victories. However, the No. 2 seeded pair of Alexander Cozbinov and Volodymyr Uzhylovskyi suffered an upset to the British team of Jack Findel-Hawkins and Mark Whitehouse in three sets.
