Day 2 at the Old Capitol Tennis Championships will be busy with the conclusion of qualifying singles and the start of main draw play. Sixteen players will compete in eight qualifying matches to earn their way into the main draw. Main draw play will begin with four singles matches followed by four doubles matches.
Tuesday’s feature match will see Alfredo Perez (USA) take on Darryl Hale (GBR). While they have not played each other in any previous matches, both found difficulty in closing out their first round matches. Perez, the No. 6 seed, and Hale, the No. 11 seed, won convincing first sets but narrowly escaped their second sets to win.
Monday’s player of the day, the No. 7 seed, Alex Lebedev (USA), pictured, will compete against Alexandre Rotsaert (USA) for the right to play in the main draw. Lebedev, a former college player and Rotsaert, a current college player, have not faced each other in any previous matches. They will play on Court 7 beginning at 10:00am tomorrow.
After knocking out the No. 2 seed, Canadian Joshua Peck will face Vuk Budic (USA). Budic will look to beat another Canadian as he defeated Peck’s countryman, Jonathan Sorbo, on Monday.
In main draw action, Hawkeye Oliver Okonkwo (GBR), will take on No. 5 seed, Aziz Dougaz (TUN). Oliver had a great season at Iowa which included 27 match wins, ranking 4th all time in school history. The 27 victories are also the most wins ever for an Iowa freshman.
Day 2 also sees the start of main draw doubles play which includes four matches. All four seeded teams will be in action. The doubles draw is headlined by No. 1 seeds Lloyd Glasspool and Alejandro Gonzalez. Two Hawkeyes doubles teams are included in the doubles draw but won’t compete until Wednesday July 17.
