IOWA CITY, July 10, 2018 – The Old Capitol Futures announced today the doubles wild card lineup which will start play on Tuesday, July 17. An exciting lineup of Hawkeye players with experience under their belts at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex will be featured in the field.
The Old Capitol Futures is a USTA Pro Circuit event and part of a summer long tour which will feature thousands of players from across the globe. Players competing here in Iowa City next week will rank up to 300 in the world, all vying for $25,000 in total prize money. This professional tennis event will be the first of its kind held in Iowa since 1986.
The first doubles duo to be featured in the tournament is Josh Silverstein and Jason Kerst. In their separate careers, Silverstein is 53-37 in doubles matches while Kerst went 4-6. In their only match together, Josh and Jason won 6-0 not dropping a single game. Silverstein is the seasoned veteran of the pair, who played for the Hawkeyes from 2014-2018 and is tied eighth in program history with 117 combined doubles and singles wins.
The second Hawkeye duo to be featured is Will Davies and Joe Tyler. Davies, of Norwich, England, has racked up a doubles record of 22-11 with the Hawkeyes during his freshman year. Tyler, of Corby, England, boasts a record of 17-10 during his freshman year. Both are sophomores-to-be at Iowa and have won 6 international junior titles together in England before attending Iowa.
The third Hawkeye duo to be featured is Kareem Allaf and Piotr Smietana. Allaf, a redshirt junior and US citizen who plays for Dubai, has a career doubles record of 35-27. His Polish teammate Smietana boasts a career doubles record of 21-11 during his freshman year. These two international players, along with their other international teammates, have made a large impact on the Iowa program and all wish to continue their success later this month.
