The Hawkeye duo of Will Davies (pictured) and Oliver Okonkwo took advantage of their doubles wildcard and advanced to the quarterfinals. After winning a close first set 7-5, Davies and Okonkwo pulled away to defeat Juan Aguilar and Hady Habib.
Qualifying No. 1 seed and Iowa native Alexander Brown (pictured right) won his match against Ian Chadwell today to advance to the singles main draw. Brown took the first set 6-4 before surrendering the second set 6-3. After falling behind 9-6 in the match tiebreak, Brown battled back to score a 13-11 victory.
Day 2 at the Old Capitol Tennis Championships will be busy with the conclusion of qualifying singles and the start of main draw play. Sixteen players will compete in eight qualifying matches to earn their way into the main draw. Main draw play will begin with four singles matches followed by four doubles matches.
The Old Capitol Tennis Championships will award current Iowa Hawkeyes Men Tennis players Kareem Allaf and Oliver Okonkwo with wild card entries into the main draw singles tournament of the USTA Pro Circuit event.
Play at the 2019 Old Capitol Tennis Championships will begin with qualifying singles on Monday, July 15. As many as thirty-two players will compete for one of eight places in the tournament’s main draw. Matches at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreational Center (HTRC) begin at 10:00am.
